Memphis averages 5–7 severe thunderstorm events per year, with hail being a major concern from March through June. Hail as small as 1 inch in diameter can crack asphalt shingles, dislodge protective granules, and compromise the waterproof seal. Wind damage often starts at the edges and ridge line, where uplift forces are strongest — lifting shingle tabs, breaking seals, and exposing the underlayment beneath.

What to look for: Circular dents on shingles or metal flashing, dark spots where granules are missing, shingle tabs that are lifted or creased, and debris accumulation in valleys and gutters.

With over 53 inches of annual rainfall, Memphis roofs must handle enormous water volume. Leaks rarely appear directly below the entry point — water travels along rafters, decking, and insulation before showing as a ceiling stain. The most common leak sources are deteriorated flashing around chimneys, plumbing vents, and skylights; cracked pipe boots; failed valley seals; and clogged gutters that cause water to back up under the drip edge.

What to look for: Water stains on ceilings or walls, musty odors in the attic, daylight visible through the roof deck, and peeling paint on soffits or fascia boards.

Memphis summers push attic temperatures above 150°F without proper ventilation. This extreme heat accelerates the aging of asphalt shingles by drying out the petroleum-based binders, causing curling, cracking, and premature granule loss. Inadequate attic ventilation — a common issue in older Memphis homes — traps moisture and heat, shortening roof lifespan by 5–10 years and increasing cooling costs by 10–25%.

What to look for: Shingles that are curling at the edges, excessive granules in gutters, a sagging roof deck, and unusually high summer energy bills.

Every roofing material has a finite lifespan that Memphis weather can shorten. Three-tab asphalt shingles last 15–20 years, architectural shingles 25–30 years, and metal roofing 40–70 years. As a roof ages, the waterproof seal between shingle layers weakens, nail heads corrode, and the synthetic underlayment (or felt paper on older roofs) deteriorates. A roof that's 80% through its expected life is significantly more vulnerable to storm damage than a newer system.

What to look for: Shingles that are brittle or break when touched, exposed nail heads, moss or algae growth (common in shaded areas), and neighbors on your street getting new roofs.
